Beyond Wild Isles online event to showcase unseen salmon footage

The Missing Salmon Alliance (MSA) invites the public to join them for an evening in conversation with Silverback Films producer, Chris Howard, and renowned photographer and filmmaker, Richard Davies, to discover the story behind the remarkable filming of wild Atlantic salmon for Wild Isles, the recent BBC One wildlife series presented by Sir David Attenborough. Hosted by our Head of Communications, Jonathon Muir, in conversation with Chris Howard and Richard Davies, the online event will take place on Thursday 18th May 2023 from 8pm-9pm.

The public can sign up to the event online for free, with an optional donation to the Missing Salmon Alliance, to hear from the team behind BBC Wild Isles who brought the story of salmon decline to a mass television audience. Through pioneering camera work, narration and cinematography, Silverback Films producer, Chris Howard, harnessed the filming skills of Richard Davies to bring new attention to what is happening to the ‘King of Fish’.

‘Returning salmon numbers have fallen by 70% in just 25 years. At the current rate of decline, they may disappear from all our rivers in as little as 20 years’ time. The grandchildren of these fish may be the last to make this astonishing journey.’ – Sir David Attenborough

BBC Wild Isles ‘Freshwater’ episode, April 2nd 2023

The ‘Freshwater’ episode of Wild Isles, which featured the wild Atlantic salmon story, was released on April 2nd 2023.

Following on from the episode, this online event will showcase a selection of incredible and previously unseen salmon footage, and interview the Wild Isles team about the process of documenting these remarkable creatures on film

From egg, to parr, to smolt and returning adult, the team will share a selection of stunning footage, talk through the processes involved in capturing each of these life stages, describe the threats facing salmon at each of these points in their life, and share news on how the Missing Salmon Alliance is working towards a brighter future for this iconic species.

As an Alliance of six organisations, the Missing Salmon Alliance builds on the existing work of each partner organisation to maximise impact by taking a coordinated approach and action in order to halt and reverse the decline of wild Atlantic salmon.

The goal of the Missing Salmon Alliance is to build an evidence-base to influence national and international decision-makers to regulate activities that adversely impact wild Atlantic salmon.
