To The Journey's End – The Life Cycle of the Atlantic Salmon – Trailer from bernard martin on Vimeo.
Aberdeenshire-based filmmaker Bernard Martin captures the life-long struggle of the Atlantic salmon in his documentary “To The Journey’s End” filmed in the North East of Scotland.
Bernard has self-funded this 7 year long project which he is making available as an educational resource. It is hoped that schools and colleges across the North East (and we suspect around the country!) will use the film as a valuable learning tool to inspire local students to think about the conservation of the species.
The Film was launched at the Macduff Marine Aquarium on Thursday 13th April 2017 and showed at the Scottish Salmon Festival Film night at Eden Court on 29th August 2017.
The film, featuring rarely-seen footage (including the spawning sequence that Bernard so patiently waited for) from the North East of Scotland allows viewers to follow the fascinating life-cycle of the Atlantic salmon, fraught with danger. The viewer will appreciate how endangered Atlantic salmon really are, and the challenges they face throughout their struggle for survival in the modern world.
Bernard said: “Year after year we were disappointed not to film the spawning sequence – heavy rains, lack of fish, being in the wrong place at the right time and equipment failing at the critical moment, all meant another year’s filming. Without the spawning sequence there was no film at all. What was really uplifting was that the people who work on and look after our rivers never gave up on me.”
Bernard received input throughout the making of the film to ensure he accurately portrayed the life of the Scottish Atlantic salmon. Without the help from the District Salmon Fishery Boards and Fisheries Trusts of the North East of Scotland the film would not have been possible. Bernard thanked Board and Trust staff involved with the filming, which was very much a group effort.
The Atlantic Salmon Trust commends Bernard on his patience, tenacity, excellent filmography and attention to detail!
