Wild Salmon Day
Wild Salmon Crisis
The wild Atlantic salmon population in Great Britain is now endangered.
A Global Movement for Wild Salmon Recovery
Wild salmon cross borders, oceans and cultures — and the challenge of securing their future is a global one. In 2025, the Atlantic Salmon Trust joined the Pacific Salmon Foundation, First Nations Fisheries Council of British Columbia and Atlantic Salmon Federation to launch International Wild Salmon Day – a shared global moment for wild salmon every year on 1st June.
The ambition is simple: to give wild salmon a stronger global voice. International Wild Salmon Day celebrates what these remarkable fish mean to people and ecosystems, raises awareness of the pressures they face, and shines a light on the practical work already underway to restore them. It connects organisations and communities across the Atlantic and Pacific around a common message, showing that while the challenges may differ from river to river, salmon recovery is a shared responsibility.
The response demonstrates the potential of that collective voice. The inaugural international campaign in 2025 reached more than four million people across 44 countries, with thousands visiting the new Wild Salmon Day website and more than 250 people and organisations signing the Wild Salmon Declaration. In 2026, over seven million people were reached by the campaign, with over 700 responses to our Wild Salmon Day poll.
Now an annual movement, International Wild Salmon Day is about building that momentum, uniting people behind wild salmon, celebrating those delivering recovery on the ground, and inspiring greater action across the world. In 2026, the message focused particularly on restoring healthy salmon rivers and habitats, with the initiative also joining the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
